Waikaumalo 7 Mile Challenge

 

DIRECTIONS:  From Hilo, take Hwy 19 North, directly at mile marker 19 (near town of Ninole) turn left onto Old Mamalahoa Hwy.  You will see the sign for Waikaumalo Park (Parks and Recreation, County of Hawaii) on the mauka side of the highway.  Continue on Old Mamalahoa Hwy for ¼ mile.  Waikaumalo Park will be on the right side of the road after the old wooden bridge.

 COURSE:  This challenging out and back course runs along the Old Mamalahoa Hwy towards Hilo (SE) on a good paved asphalt road.  Start on the old wooden bridge and begin on a quiet country road with a mixture of tree lined canopies, up and down gulches, several scenic bridges, breaking out to open country side with expanding views of the Hamakua Coast and Pacific Ocean.  Course rolls through Umauma with the turnaround just after the World Botanical Gardens and Ziplines.

RACE DAY REGISTRATION ONLY: Check-in from 6:30 to 7:15am

 AID STATIONS: Water will be provided at mile 2 and 5 on the course

 FACILITIES: Large covered pavilion with men’s and women’s restrooms, potable water, electricity and several large picnic tables.  Tree-covered grassy areas near the stream are available for outdoor picnics.  Some parking at pavilion, but there is also some grass areas on the side of the road that could be used.  Carpooling is encouraged.
